The fan fiction of “Grendel” meets the dragon but instead, the dragon tries to get Grendel to befriend the humans and Grendel becomes the Destroyer

Grendel, full of depression about the human’s lack of ability to understand him, walks into a cave. He starts getting angry that he’s not able to get answers. As he walks deeper into the cave, he finds stashes of gold and gems. Soon as he looks up at the mountain of gold, he encounters a giant, red dragon. Being pressured by the massive presence of the dragon and its mighty aura which got Grendel shivering, the dragon calms Grendel down. “I see that you are upset and need many answers,” says the dragon. Grendel then learns that the dragon is one of the most knowledgeable beings in the world. The dragon encourages Grendel to “sit on his own gold” and says he will find a way to bond with humans. Grendel leaves the cave with confusion and a lot of thought. Little did he know that the dragon had given him the ability to communicate and persuade human beings. One day, Grendel sneaks around the night when he happens to run into a blind, old priest. The priest sat alone next to a statue that looked a lot like Grendel himself. As Grendel slowly creeps up on the priest, the priest turns around and he feels a small presence near him. Grendel asks the priest what the statue is and why he decides to pray to it.

“This is the Destroyer, the chief god,” says the priest.

“He is one of the most powerful beings in this world.”

“He sets limitations on humans and gives the humans purpose in life to building this society.” “So that is why the Danes sit in this ring next to this statue doing this worship,” says Grendel. “Is this why you rebuild this statue every time it is destroyed.”

The blind, old priest nods slowly.

Grendel says,

“The trees are dead.”

“Leaves are falling off with them withering away.”

“Fire pits barely living by.”

“Yet your spirit with this Destroyer is still lit up.”

The blind, old priest says “I’m sure you’ll understand one day when you sit on your own gold and follow on with it.”

He reaches in on Grendel to give him a pat on the shoulder but instead touches Grendel’s legs. The priest realizes that Grendel, whom he had been talking to, was no ordinary human. “What are you?” the priest cries.

As all the other priests come in walking into the ring, they encounter the giant figure, Grendel. “I’ve learned human anatomy,” says one of the other priests.

“That is no human.”

Grendel moves back a little hurt by their comments knowing that he does not fit in with them.

However, he remembers the dragon’s advice to befriend the human as that was his own gold. Grendel looks behind him as he stands at eye level with the Destroyer statue. “I am the Destroyer, the chief god,” says Grendel.

As the priest looks back and forth at the statue and then at Grendel, they feel shocked. Grendel, then realizes that he is able to communicate with them and persuade them. “Had the dragon given me this power?” He had not been able to communicate with the humans before for they had not understood him.

As he notices the priest bowing down to him one by one, he finally feels understood and that he now has something that he always wanted.

Grendel feels really accomplished as he was only able to observe the Danes from afar but now he is within the society and important to them. Grendel spends the next few years spending his life with the humans and helping out with their lives.

He visits the dragon, a few years later.

As he walks into the cave, he finds a lot of artwork and a smaller amount of gold. “Have you befriended the humans yet?” says the Dragon.

“Yes. I have found my own gold and I’ve been living with the humans and helping them,” Grendel responds.

“What happened to all your gold,” says Grendel.

The dragon laughs.

“Both of us have lived over a few thousand of years and we have many more to go.” “However, not all of us have the immortality stamina”

“We are all bound to die someday anyways, so we should just try something new and not get held back on one interest.”

“Don’t let those humans hold you back on your potential. ”

Grendel leaves the cave. He stays with the Danes until 63 years later. He felt bored as he realizes that everyone’s life passes on and he has stayed the same. Grendel soon leaves the Danes to explore the world as he follows the dragon’s advice.
