William He, Period 7, 5/1/23

Daytime- the time of safety. The sun is out, its warm light can be felt, vibrant colors are all around, and the noise of activity is so loud, it makes you deaf to it. But not for monsters. It is the time where they can be seen, be caught. They need to hide during the day. The noise causes them extreme pain, with the penetrating vibrations and frequencies seeping deep into the ground where they hide, they feel it as a looming threat over them. That they may be found with one precisely aimed drill, and taken away. Those who are found never come back. “Day by day we lose our people, our homes! If we don’t fight back, soon our entire world will be taken from us! Everyone and everything we know will be lost and replaced. It is only a matter of time before those humans extinguish us for their own world.” Human houses are constantly built over those that live under. Monsters that hide behind the dense greens of the forests are exposed when humans need to expand. “But humans are just trying to survive”, one monster said. The leader growls, “Their prosperity is our suffering, the more they thrive, the more we have to hide! It’s them or us!” They called upon an attack on the human world at night. They were left with no other choice as the humans gained strength with every passing day. When the darkness of the night finally covered the surface, it was finally safe for the monsters to come out. Usually, only those that roamed too far out at night would be snatched away by the monsters. But unbeknownst to the humans, today would be very different. Hidden away inside their homes, tucked in under their blankets, they think that they are safe. It was only until screams filled the quiet night that the humans realized that something had gone terribly wrong. They could do nothing to fight back as the world now belonged to the monsters; the night was their domain and humans could only wait for the light of the day to return. When day finally came and the monsters had ended their attack, the humans gathered and decided to declare war. This was how the eternal war between monsters and humans began, with both parties clashing in an endless cycle of violence from night to day. After all, each race perceived the other as foreign; to the monsters, humans may as well be called monsters in their language. Therefore, only the winners of this battle get to decide what a monster is.
