Write about your thoughts regarding any of the fiction or nonfiction covered in class.

“Interview with a Vampire” by Anne Rice is a wonderful novel that has many deep ideas that are portrayed through the concept of fiction in Vampires. A very interesting thread throughout the novel is the relationship between humans and vampires. Louis and Lestat have a complex relationship that is both symbiotic and parasitic. Louis depends on Lestat for guidance and sustenance, but also resents him for turning him into a vampire. Lestat, on the other hand, sees Louis as both a friend and a source of entertainment, who he manipulates for his own purposes. Through their relationship, the novel raises questions about power dynamics and the ethics of feeding on human blood.

One example of a power dynamic in their relationship is when the characters are first introduced to each other. Louis is a human in despair and mourning the loss of his wife and child. Lestat offers him the chance to become a vampire, and Louis accepts that immortality will free him from his pain. However, after his transformation, Louis finds that he is still very much in grief and the pain stays with him.

This power dynamic is also applicable in real life except instead of it being a vampire and a human it could be a boss taking advantage of his employees - harassing them and treating them horribly but the employees don’t know any better. Or it could be a domestic violence case, where the aggressor takes advantage of a hurt individual abusing them creating the power dynamic where one is in complete control mentally and physically of the other.

IN conclusion, “Interview with a Vampire” has many underlying storylines to it, and when you truly analyze each individual in the novel, you can see how this fantasy truly reflects the real world.
