Evan Leung, Period 2, 2/15/23

Creativity & Fiction

Craft a piece of FAN fiction related to any of the reading we’ve done in class that addresses one or more of the following:

Literary elements (i.e. structure, tone, diction, mood, irony, and figurative language) to craft a narrative.

Structural features of drama (stage directions, character attributions/tags, dialogue, monologues, and/or soliloquies) to craft a script.

Multidimensional characters to develop themes and create socio-political metaphors.

“Another job, huh?” I set my half-eaten bowl of dinner down on the wooden bar and looked to my right. The source of the question, a local villager who frequents the tavern I was in.

“Yup,” I replied.

“What’s it this time? I bet it’s just another troll or werewolf.”

“A vampire.”

After a pause, “Well, I’m sure I wouldn’t have to worry about the famed Vampire hunter.”

I let out a sigh. “For the last time, I’m not some notorious vampire hunter.”

“Sure, sure. Whatever you say. Now, which unlucky vampire are you going to meet today?”

“The one that resides in the manor up on the mountain.”

The villager’s face coiled back in response. What was a bright and energetic aura a second before was now a grim and darkened expression, overcome with caution and fear. Slight nausea overcomes him as he uses the bar as support. Puzzled, I asked if something was wrong.

“That vampire has been the talk of the town lately. Stories about it doing unfathomable things, that it surpasses all other vampires. If you’re seriously thinking about killing that one, be extremely prepared.”

I give him a thanks as he pays and leaves. It’s just another vampire, right? I have nothing to worry about. I’ve done this plenty of times before. But I heed his warning, and decide to prepare more than I normally do. I packed every kind of vampire countermeasure known: crucifixes, garlic, stakes, and even some amulets. I loaded my crossbow with silver-tipped arrows and sheathed my silver dagger. I put on my black gear that protected me against bites and blended in with the night. Leaving nothing behind, I set off at sunset.

I arrived in the dead of night. The manor was extraordinarily large. It was completely black, blending in almost perfectly with the darkness. Entering, I was greeted by nothing but the same darkness. The interior was a labyrinth. There was no way to tell where one was going, nor where one came from. I began forward, placing custom-made glowsticks along the way to ensure I could find my way out.

It came from the shadows above. As I was about to place another glowstick down, I aimed my crossbow at the movement. Looking down my weapon, I saw a bat flying toward me. Its dark wings flapping rapidly, the camouflaged creature oddly showed no hostility, and came to a halt right before me. It stayed there, suspended, before flying off to the left. At this point, I had been searching for what felt like days. I found no clues during that time, so I decided to follow the mysterious animal, while continuing to mark my path.

The bat and I stopped before a grand double door. Its size was comparable to the mountain itself. This must be it, I thought. As I was mentally preparing myself, the doors creaked open on their own. And there it was before me: the vampire; my target. It was clad in blinding, pure white from head to toe, as if I was staring at the sun. As it turned around to face me from the window, I was entranced by its purple eyes.

“Are you the visitor Nuntius spoke of?”

The vampire’s voice boomed across the room. Regaining focus, I immediately trained my crossbow on the vampire’s head.

“Nuntius?” I responded.

The bat that was once close to me flew over cheerfully to the vampire, landing on its hair.

“Are you here to kill me?” the vampire asked, letting out a deep sigh. It was clearly disappointed.

“Did you expect something else?”

“Nay, but I’m welcome to surprises.”

“If this is what you expected, then why do you show no concern for your life?”

“I cannot show concern for something I despise, but alas cannot lose. Please, instead of engaging in pointless battle, let’s sit down and talk.”

While exchanging pleasantries, I could tell for certain: that vampire is not something I could defeat. The way it carries itself out and speaks. Despite showing no combat abilities, it was a message as clear as day. I reluctantly agreed to the vampire’s proposal. Little did I know, that conversation was far beyond anything I could’ve imagined, and I would’ve been better off dead, fighting against that undefeatable vampire.
