Socio-Political Consciousness
I, like many people in America, am a first born American in my family. My parents and brother were born in a small country called Slovakia and immigrated here in 2001. It was hard for them to live a normal life in the beginning by not knowing english and doing work for not a lot back. But that didn’t stop them. My brother went to school when he was 5 and he thought he was going to have fun. He was wrong. He was bullied and harassed for not being “American”. It was hard for my parents to explain to him that people that looked like him didn;t like him because they were from a different country. He was devastated. In this country, many people get harassed for being an immigrant even though this country was built by immigrants. People love to oppress other people even though it is for the dumbest reasons. Why harass someone who is trying to make a better life for themselves and their family. I ask that question myself everytime i think about what my brother and parents went through.
The way I look back at myself and look critically is that I can't believe that I was so naive. I never understood why it was hard for my brother to get a job out of college and why my parents always look around in a store trying to see if something might happen. I never had to learn those things because I was born here. We as Americans created this myth that we are better than the immigrants when in reality we all are immigrants (except for native americans). The reason why America is the way it is is thanks to the immigrants. I just don't want to keep a closed mind on all these immigration issues. I believe that we should keep welcoming immigrants into this country but we also have to look at ourselves and see where we as Americans fall. We can't just harass someone for wanting to have a better life and more opportunities. It just is not right.
