Modern Mythology 2022

At this current point in time, what specific goal(s) do you have for yourself? Why?

The end of the school year is almost here. My current goal right now is to end senior year smoothly and enjoy the rest of my time at Staten Island Tech. Ever since the beginning of freshman year, the only thing I cared about was schoolwork, homework, and grades. Now it is the end of the school year where there is not much to do, especially after AP exams, leaving me time to relax and at least enjoy a few more days here at Staten Island Tech. The end of the school year also provides me with free time that I usually did not have during the school year to finally binge on any movies or shows without having to worry about school and work. With college, many changes would occur, like being far from my family and friends, leading many students to feel overwhelmed. As college comes closer, another goal of mine is to prepare for college and everything I need before I move in to prevent myself from feeling overwhelmed as I start a new journey.

How do you demonstrate resilience towards achieving this goal? (or these goals?)

Since COVID-19 first spread, I had missed about one and a half to two years of proper school years. During this time, I missed out on any school activities there were planned, as well as socializing with friends. When we depart for college, there is a chance that I will most likely not see most of my friends. This motivates me to try to find more ways to hang out with them a little more, like attending more club meetings. Transitioning to college life would not be an easy path. There would be many new changes that I would have to encounter like being far from home, and not having the support system of my friends and family to help me out when I just arrived at college. I have started to ask my college advisors for advice to help myself feel less overwhelmed. Instead of trying to take big steps with transitioning to college, taking small steps one by one would also help me feel less overwhelmed. In general, taking the rest of the school year and the summer to relax would help my mental health in general.

How does the world around you affect your perception of this goal? (or these goals?)

I had always been surrounded by my family every day. My family has always been there to help me out whenever I need help. I always had this support system near me. The environment I currently live in makes the idea of being independent and transitioning into college seems impossible. Being miles away from home eliminates the fact that I would always have a support system near me. However, the perspective that independence is important since my family and friends cannot always be there for me helps me understand that adjusting to this new journey and environment would be difficult but would have to be done in the near future anyways. This perspective also helped me realize that gaining some independence can help me cut down on habits, like procrastination, since now there would not be anyone looking over me now on a daily basis.
