Goal Setting & Growth

Modern Mythology 2022

At this current point in time, what specific goal(s) do you have for yourself? Why?

As we’re nearing the end of the school year, and my final year here at Staten Island Technical High School, my goal in a broader sense would be to graduate with the least amount of regrets left behind. Narrowing it down, this would include sorting through the leftover tasks on the to-do list for college decisions, finishing up exams and assignments left in the last month, and contemplating the choices I’ve made up till this point. The first two objectives may be considered rudimentary towards any seniors at this stage, while the final one is held subjectively towards my own person. Acknowledging the fact that I had always been overly indecisive and easily overwhelmed by irrational fears of whatever my choices may bring, it proves helpful to assess my own decisions over time.

How do you demonstrate resilience towards achieving this goal? (or these goals?)

While it is easier said that merely having a proper priority label on these tasks would get the job done, my procrastination and ignorance to many subjects does hinder my progression on the first two goals. Not to mention how unlikely it would have been for me to submit my college application on time had my mom not ultimately forced me to check a week prior, which ended up revealing that I would have difficulty signing in due to technical issues on the website’s end. Despite my progress for the first two tasks being less than applaudable, I do believe that I am making fair improvement in delving deeper into my thoughts and working harder to erase irrational fears that block me from consciously making decisions for myself. It helps to be surrounded by friends and peers who lack no amount of confidence both in themselves and for me. Though they support me thinking for myself, it is reassuring to know that I’d have a place to fall back on when I’m feeling less than levelheaded.

How does the world around you affect your perception of this goal? (or these goals?)

As is commonly known and believed amongst the graduating class of 2022, senioritis does put up a blockage not only to my performance but also that of other students. I find myself giving in easier to my procrastinator nature, staying up well beyond a healthy bedtime just to submit assignments on the dot. And while lack of sleep is nothing new, it seems to hit particularly hard this year and at the least opportune moment where seniors are expected to put forth a final burst of motivation to end the year on a good stretch. It also proves to be rather discouraging when all your fellow classmates find it simpler to skip out on some days of school simply because they couldn’t muster up the strength, although the sentiment is understandable. Aside from school performances, this period is also a rather important time of transition for young adulthood, and that one step closer to a role out in society, a world larger than the schools one attended their whole life. It can be rather frightening, worse so when considering the added responsibilities on my shoulder going forth with every decision I make. I do hope I will find friends like me in the upcoming years, where we can understand and share the burden of decision making.
