Money…Is It the Most Important Thing in Our Lives?

Money is not the most important thing in life…that’s what my friend told me the other day when we were talking about what one should strive for in life. I totally agree with him. There are many things in life that are more important than money, but I believe that in order to start the search for those important things, you must first earn the money.

My goal since the start of the new year is to earn more money. The importance of money has been highlighted to me since the start of my college process. College is expensive. Even with all the financial aid and the scholarships that the colleges have given me so far, I still have to pay at least $20,000 a year- that’s $80,000 over 4 years, and even more, if I want to continue my studies beyond the undergraduate level. Education is really important in modern society, especially in the pharmaceutical field that I want to work in. To get there, however, costs a lot. After having the talk with my parents, we came to a consensus that I would have to pay that amount all on my own. That’s why I have dedicated the second half of my senior year, and plan to dedicate my time in college to get jobs and earn money.

Although this goal doesn’t have a specific or clear endpoint, I have been working hard to achieve this goal. Over the past few months, I have been working at an internship, earning $15 an hour for 10 hours a week. Although sometimes I hit some difficult roadblocks and want to just quit, I clench my teeth and continue because I know that every single cent I earn now would be less towards the amount that I’ll have to loan later on (which I hope to be the least amount possible). After this internship ends in a few weeks, I plan to get another part-time job.

“Money may not be the most important thing in the world, but it sure is the most important thing in society.”-My grandfather, the wisest man I’ve ever known.

This statement that my grandfather said to me when I was young has become really heavy this past year. Money is the most important thing in society. People may say that love and family come first, but these things can’t hold without money. Even if one finds love, how can that relationship last if the couple can’t pay for anything? How can a family find happiness if they can’t pay the bills? It is really hard in our society to get a good-paying job without having the necessary education. And without a good-paying job, all those things that are more important than money are out of my grasp. This, I believe, is the problem with this society. Although I don’t have the right solution, I believe that we should find a good solution and steer the focus off of money in our society.

Until then, however, I will have to work as hard as possible to earn as much money as possible- otherwise, I would be in debt before my career even started.
