Literacy & Learning

Write about your thoughts regarding any of the fiction or non-fiction covered in class.

I think that the article on lobster behavior is very interesting. The information was so shocking that I actually continuously think about it sometimes in class. The trait that some living creatures will better themselves off by dragging others down is very intriguing. Lobster behavior was actually the first thing I thought about during Group 1’s lesson on Balder’s death before the mistletoe. The mention of the mistletoe being a parasitic plant and its correlation with how Loki is kind of parasitic in the way that he brings the Aesir gods down so that he can rise up could almost make him seen as engaging in lobster behavior.

Reflect on any new information you have learned in English class by considering how that learning influences your critical perception.

Upon doing research for my Norse culture project, I learned that homosexual men existed and were tolerated in pre-Christian conversion. This affected my view of the LGBT community and its prevalence in history. I never realized how modern I felt the uprising of the LGBT community was until I learned about the existence of openly gay men in history. My perceptions of queer theory drastically changed as I researched how gay Norse people were still able to adhere to the concept of preserving their masculinity. This concept reshaped how I saw gender studies as well since men in Norse culture preserved their masculinity by fulfilling their gender role of fighting.

How is what you’re learning applied to any other classes/the world around you?

Character archetypes have affected the way I perceive people around me. Ever since learning about character stereotypes and how people in stories fulfill different roles, I started to apply them to the people I interact with. As I observed, I drew connections to certain traits that I felt were essential to have in a character archetype. This new habit has influenced the way I view people and their personalities.
