Mohammad Shaheer, Period 1, 2/8/24

Literacy and Learning
Mohammad Shaheer

As we are nearing the end of our reading on Grendel by John Gardner, I believe that the story has many applications to the world of a high school student and the situations they encounter. Through what has been read so far, Grendel is portrayed as a monster who experiences many instances of people neglecting him, viewing him differently, and him being in an existential crisis of not knowing what his purpose is.

This can correlate with the life of a highschool student in many different scenarios. For example, as a senior in high school, we are embarking into our future lives into college life and eventually into adulthood. This typically plays a role in one's mental thoughts in which a large sum of people don’t exactly know what they wish to do in their future and how to go about it. You can see this in Grendel as throughout the whole story he doesn’t really know exactly what his purpose in life is and what to do in the world. However, over the course of time Grendel speaks to the dragon and decides to persevere in his war with the humans. This event results in what changed Grendel to keep going, even though he still is hesitant on his role. This can also relate to a student as some people can think that they want to do a certain thing for their future their whole life, and then while pursuing it they either decide to dedicate themselves to this purpose or they are hesitant and switch their career paths.

On top of this, I believe that the work conducted in class in which we always go in depth on the reading and analysis also plays a key role in one's future. This allows for the student to go into more critical and in depth thinking, not just in class, but in the real world. It is a major asset if you can come up with in-depth and sophisticated answers to certain questions/problems. Moreover, the incorporation of surprise elements also compares to the real world as there is rarely a 100% possibility in majority of situations that will occur in the future and the ability to adapt to a change and resolve it is quite beneficial in any circumstance.
