Modern Mythology 2023

Literacy & Learning

After learning and discussing Greek mythology, Norse mythology was sort of refreshing. Stereotypically, gods are immortal, heaven is a result of good deeds, hell is hot, and so forth. However, the opposite was true for the Norse. There, gods die, to get into Valhalla (Norse equivalent of heaven), you had to die in battle, and hell was cold. In this culture, there was no good versus evil. Additionally, in Norse mythology, women were valued for a change, they were in charge of the realm of death.

I believe Norse mythology teaches the lesson that some things are simply out of anyone's control. It also had a theme of dying honorably, which is still applied to today's world. Their views and treatment of women is also seen in today's world, as they contribute so much to society. Morals including honor and hospitality were prevalent throughout Norse mythology, a reflection of their culture.
