  • Write about your thoughts regarding any of the fiction or nonfiction covered in class.

  • Reflect on any new information you have learned in English class by considering how that learning influences your critical perception.

  • How is what you’re learning applied to any other classes/the world around you?

The story of Daedalus and Icarus is about a father and his son escaping from the labyrinth that Minos had put them in. They craft wings out of wax and feathers to fly away in but because the sun’s heat could melt the wax, Daedalus warns Icarus not to fly too close to the sun. Icarus does so anyway, and like Daedalus warned him about and predicted, the wax melts which causes him to fall from the sky and drown. It is interesting because at first glance, it seems like the story is trying to tell the reader that you should always pay attention and listen to instructions carefully, but when examining the story at a deeper level, it tells much more. For example, the illustrations viewed in class depict that the story focuses not on Icarus’ fall, but instead on the setting, environment, and actions of those around him during the accident. As Icarus experiences a tragic accident, the people around him don’t care all that much and continue on with their lives as if nothing ever happened. It shows that in life, people have their own things to do and most of the time don’t care about the events in your life at all. What others think of you may not reflect what you think others think about you.
