Modern Mythology 2023

Atomic Habits & Growth

  • At this current point in time, what specific standards have you set for yourself?

  • How and why did you come to craft these standards?

  • How do you demonstrate resilience towards achieving these standards?

  • How do you assess yourself?  What adjustments do you make? How often?

It’s the start of my last year at Tech. High school, many recall as the best 4 years of their life, however, I wouldn’t describe it like that. I would instead describe it as boring and monotonous. Hours of doing what seemed to be useless math equations, hours of making up stuff for writing narratives, and hours of memorization and cramming before a Russian or biology test seem to be all I can recall when I think about my past 3 years. Therefore this year I decided to make it count, or at least make the most of my last year at Tech especially since covid stole 1 year. I want to be a positive influence on my many underclassmen babies on the track team, especially the freshman. Some specific standards I set for myself not just now but even back during summer practices were to get to know the freshmen and to make sure that they feel welcomed, being a pillar of support for them in general. Some specific standards I set for myself to accomplish those goals are to hang out more with my friends outside of school, and maybe go to some events together. I have since bought tickets to my first concert to go with my friends and even decided to be more social. I would try to do my homework when it was assigned and not put it off until the last minute causing unneeded stress. I also try to say hi to more people I know in the hallways or maybe slap them on the chest. To my freshman that I hope to be a positive influence on, I hope not to just be a senior at practice but also to be a genuine friend who would ask them about their day and give them advice, making sure that they are feeling welcomed at school. I think I demonstrated a lot of resilience through achieving these goals since I have chosen to occasionally run with the freshman and guide them through whatever problems they might face at a new school. Honestly, I don’t know how well it will work, but I have at least been able to say hi to the freshmen in school and talk to them. As for assessing myself, I want to do something I learned in last year Dr. Davis’s class, called journaling. I want to spend at least 5 to 10 minutes a day writing down all the positive things that happened that day, making adjustments to the little things I do on a day-to-day basis if needed.
