Goal Setting and Growth
At this current point in time, what specific goal(s) do you have for yourself? Why?
At this point in time, my main goal is to make the most of my remaining time in
highschool and have as much fun as I can. When I think about my time in high school so far, I
feel that I never really got to enjoy any of it at all. The thing that affected this most was the
pandemic, which took out a huge chunk of my life where I was just stuck indoors and I did not
get to meet new people. Even after coming back to school, it was senior year and I was just so
stressed out from college applications that everything was not enjoyable. Now however, with
college letters released, I find that I have more time than ever. I want to make up for the
experiences that I lost by going out more. I want to meet new people and connect more with the
friends that I already have and graduate high school knowing that I enjoyed it to its fullest
without regrets.
How do you demonstrate resilience toward achieving this goal?
After realizing my goal, I found that in order to have time to have fun, I needed to cut out
things that would cause me to go home straight after school and hole myself up in my room.
The biggest thing that I had to cut out was video games which were taking up a lot of my free
time. I made video games, something that I would be able to do at most an hour a day on a
school day and only after sunset if it were a weekend day. Taking away video games from
myself gave me more time to do after school activities and surprisingly even made me feel
better mentally which improved the overall quality of my life, helping out with my goal. At school,
one of the first things that I did was join a sports team. Here I was able to befriend
underclassmen and alumni, something that I would not actively do before. Being a part of a
team also gives me this sense of community, which is a good feeling that I cannot really
describe. Some things that I am looking forward to are the multicultural fair and spring fling,
which is a field day in spring, if that happens this year. With three months left till I graduate, I
hope that I stumble upon many interesting activities that will bring me a new experience and add
to my high school memories.
How does the world around you affect your perception of this goal?
The world around me makes me want to achieve this goal even more. When I think
about the future, I realize that once I am an adult, I won’t have this type of time anymore to just
do what I want. I am privileged enough where I do not currently need to have a job, or take care
of younger siblings and study to be the best. Right now is where I have the most freedom to
myself and it is now where I can and should be the most selfish with my time. Once I’m an adult,
I will have a job, a schedule that I need to follow, and if I think far enough I might even have a
family of my own that I need to take care of. There will be so many responsibilities that I will not
have the time to try new things and meet new people the way I can now. It is now or never so I
need to make the best of what I have now because if I don’t I know that as an adult, I will regret
not taking my chances.
