Literacy & Learning

Write about your thoughts regarding any of the fiction or nonfiction covered in class.

Reflect on any new information you have learned in English class by considering how that learning influences your critical perception.

How is what you’re learning applied to any other classes/the world around you?

After reading stories from the Bible, I’ve learned that there are some major connections that can be made to the real world. One of these connections was that God knows all and knows more about everything than one can even comprehend. This illustration of God as a figure who can do everything and anything because he is the all knowing is very intriguing to me, as I feel that this same notion of superiority over another because one person may know more than another is very prevalent in our society today. In today’s world, perception of one person knowing more than another may lead that person to assume authority over another. This can be seen in many facets of life, especially working environments.

Throughout this unit on the Bible, I’ve definitely broadened my knowledge of the lessons that are taught in the Bible. I’ve always known about stories, such as Noah’s Ark and the Apple with Adam and Eve, but in the past few weeks, I’ve learned more about how the Bible actually works, with different pieces of literature connecting with various other stories in the Bible. By using a literary perspective to read stories from the Bible, it was interesting to see how the main ideas and morals of many of the lessons we learned in class revolved around lessons that we can use in our daily lives. Lessons such as to believe in God, no matter what, know that God will always have a plan for those who are faithful to him, and many others showed me why people revere the Bible. Also the way we learned about other short stories through the presentations was also very enjoyable, as it was definitely more interesting than reading the stories straight up. I was able to see how my classmates interpreted the stories and many of them explained the stories in ways I would never have. I usually veer away from talking about religion in class, as I don’t believe in God, but the way that the lessons were planned and executed made it comfortable to, as the class focused on the morals from the stories in the Bible.

After reading many of the stories in the Bible, I’ve realized how subjective morality truly is. As objectively as one may try to interpret the Bible, there is just no way to fully interpret it without bringing in your personal opinions into your interpretation. One may interpret a story one way, while another may interpret it another way and both can be right. With many of these stories involving what people interpret as being right/wrong, subjectivity may lead to many different interpretations.
