Aim: How does the conclusion of the road highlight the allusion of the boy as a Christ figure?

What is the metaphor and symbolism of the fire?

Today, we talked about how the fire represents many symbolism and meanings throughout the
book. The fire itself is a meaning of life which could mean that the boy has a responsibility to
carry on the goodness in the human race. To carry the fire means to carry on hope for the
human race. It might seem that the world is over, but as long as someone is alive and is
thriving, they are carrying the weight of human history on their shoulders. It also relates to
modern mythology about how the gods were so mighty because they have the fire.
When Prometheus carried the fire to the humans, the humans were given hope in that they
advance and thrive. The fire let them do all types of things so the humans could live on in the darkness.

In class, we also talked about how the boy could or could not be considered as a Christ figure.
Most of us said he was, because the boy was self-sacrificial, very forgiving, very responsible,
tends to spend time in the wilderness, came to redeem an unworthy world, and he rose
from the footprints of his deceased father. Even though the man and boy encountered some
bad people, the boy tends to forgive the bad people. He tried to give them clothes and food
but the man said no. The boy is a very sacrificial character because he gave stuff to others
when they were also desperate. He thinks of others even if they are strangers, before himself.
He came to redeem the world because he had to carry the fire. He had to carry on the
memories of the past so that hope is always going to be there in the future. When his father
died, the boy rose up and decided to carry on the old memories of his deceased father. All
these characteristics are what tells us that the boy could be a Christ figure.
